Lowering your Operator’s Vibration Exposure

Hand Arm Vibrations have been in the news for a long time with many Local Authorities trying their utmost to bring down their operator’s exposure whilst still getting those tasks completed as quickly and efficiently as possible.

The Hand Arm Vibration traffic light system operates as follows.  Any machine that is tested to be under 2.5m/s² is green while 2.6 to 5m/s² is amber and anything over 5m/s² is red. It is the ambition of many to only use machines that are in the green however this is not always possible due to the nature of some equipment and its need, use and vibrations have to be balanced.

If machines are all in the green bracket then there needs to be very little management of the vibrations.  Many Local Authorities are now changing their limits of exposure per day from 400 points down to 100 in order to remove any risk whatsoever.  This has resulted in many machines having their usage times cut which is not so much of a problem if there are teams of 3 or 4 operators that can alternate using the machine however this is not always possible.
